Wade Into It

People who wade into discomfort and vulnerability and tell the truth about their stories are the real badasses” Brené Brown

Have you ever noticed how most stories of perseverance skip over the nitty gritty dark days? They might talk about how they were faced with insurmountable obstacles, but with resolution and faith . . . they overcame it. What they don’t share – and what so many of us are uncomfortable with – are the dark days. The days where they simply lay in bed, wishing and praying their lives were different. Days that they lay on the floor, unable to get up from the pain. The reality is that we skip over those parts because we are afraid of scaring people. We say to ourselves “Let’s face it – no one wants to hear about the days I couldn’t even get out of my pajamas. They want the good stuff, the fairy tale happy ending.” But, the reality is that if we want to be of service to others, wading into the discomfort and telling the truth can be incredibly valuable. When it comes down to it, it is a misnomer to think that what we all fear most is failure. Actually, what we fear most is falling down so hard that we won’t know how to pick ourselves back up. We fear that part where we have to dust off the pain, get back up and live again because we know that unlike the success stories people share – it takes time. It is about putting one agonizing foot forward after another. And that is where the heroism really lies – it isn’t that we overcame whatever issue we faced, but that we looked at our suffering and despair and we decided to go forward anyway. The gold (or badassery as Brené Brown says) is in the way we get back up. It is the truth about enduring that awful stuff that will ultimately help others – to show us all that we are vulnerable and that although our weakness may be uncomfortable for others to bear, contains the lessons that will get us through to better times.

Weekly Path to Peace: Wade into the discomfort.

If we want to get through any frustration, difficulty or pain, we have to wade into the discomfort. What are you avoiding in your life that feels uncomfortable or frightening? Where do you fear to go, believing you might not get back up? Spend time this week identifying any areas where you might be avoiding going in.

Think back to the times where you believed you wouldn’t get up. What did you learn during those dark days that might be of use to you or others now? Examine and journal about what might be in there that bears some fruit – a life lesson, wisdom or gift. Take time to share that lesson with someone this week.
